Chip
Implant : better than a smart card -- Dec. 22, 2006
The electronic tagging of humans may provide
immense applications from security and national identity
management to the offender tagging. The uses of this technology
are endless. It would provide a more permanent
form of identification than a smart card.
In [ the ] future, a silicon chip implant could provide a unique
and permanent source of
identification of a person, containing vast amount of data on an
individual such as nationality, medical record and citizen
data. This data would be retrieved easily and could be
transmitted instantly to any place via
internet.
In the financial sector, it would
offer new ways in personal verification technology. It would help
in curbing identity theft and prevent fraudulent access to
banking and credit card accounts because for meeting any such
transaction, the physical presence would be required.

Medical personnel enlistment by DoD -- Dec. 16, 2006
The Army will assume responsibility for training
enlisted medical personnel in the military
services and manage all DOD medical research under a
new governance plan for the Military
Health System approved by Deputy Secretary of
Defense Gordon England last month, MHS officials said.
MHS said the plan calls for co-location of the Army, Navy and Air
Force surgeons general offices and the Tricare Management
Activity, which manages the health plans covering 9.2 million
active-duty and retired personnel and their families. The plan
also calls for joint medical operations in Washington, D.C., and
San Antonio, and a possible extension of joint medical operations
to other areas that provide care to personnel to all three
services

"Dying Patient Law" goes into effect Friday Dec. 15, 2006; no court
intervention
a doctor can refrain from providing medical treatment,
or abstain from renewing a repeated treatment, without risking
facing manslaughter charges.
Until today, terminally ill patients who wished not to receive
life-prolonging treatment were forced to appeal to court
On Friday[ Ed: December 15-2006 ] the "Dying Patient
Law", which allows physicians not to administer treatment to
terminally ill patients against their will, went into force.
The law defines a "dying patient" as one who is
terminally ill and has no more than six months left to live, even
with medical treatment, or as a patient suffering from a multiple
system failure who has up to two weeks to live.
According to the law, regular medical treatment must not be
suspended, but a doctor can refrain from providing medical
treatment, or abstain from renewing a repeated treatment, without
risking facing manslaughter charges

The movie "The Final Cut" in real life -- Dec. 13, 2006 -- " Memories for Life "
Prof Nigel Shadbolt, president of the British
Computer Society and professor of artificial intelligence at the
University of Southampton, said: "In 20 years' time it will
be possible to record high quality digital video of an entire
lifetime of human memories. It's not a question of whether it
will happen; it's already happening."
Cliff Lynch, director of the US think tank
Coalition for Networked Information, said the changes would allow
the preservation of much more detailed memories, but could lead
to a dramatic extension of state interference.

FBI monitors room
conversations with your cellphone turned OFF
-- Dec. 6, 2006
Surreptitious activation of built-in microphones by the FBI ...
"roving bug"
Kaplan's opinion said that the eavesdropping
technique "functioned whether the phone
was powered on or off." Some handsets can't be
fully powered down without removing the battery; for instance,
some Nokia models will wake up when turned off if an alarm is
set.
The U.S. Commerce Department's security office warns
that "a cellular telephone can be turned
into a microphone and transmitter for the purpose of listening to
conversations in the vicinity of the phone." An article
in the Financial Times last year said mobile providers can
"remotely
install a piece of software on to any handset,
without the owner's knowledge, which will activate the microphone
even when its owner is not making a call."
Nextel and Samsung handsets and the Motorola Razr are especially
vulnerable to software downloads
that activate their microphones, said James Atkinson, a
counter-surveillance consultant who has worked closely with
government agencies. "They can be remotely
accessed and made to transmit room audio all the time," he
said. "You can do that without having physical access to the
phone
Because modern handsets are miniature computers, downloaded
software could modify the usual interface that always displays
when a call is in progress. The spyware could then place a call
to the FBI and activate the microphone--all without the owner
knowing it happened. (The FBI declined to comment on Friday.)
"If a phone has in fact been modified to act as a bug,
the only way to counteract that is to either have a bugsweeper
follow you around 24-7, which is not practical, or to peel the
battery off the phone," Atkinson said. Security-conscious
corporate executives routinely remove the batteries from their
cell phones, he added.
But in July 2003, Ardito and his crew discovered bugs in
three restaurants,
A BBC article
from 2004 reported that intelligence agencies routinely employ
the remote-activiation method. "A mobile sitting on the desk
of a politician or businessman can act as a powerful,
undetectable bug," the article said, "enabling them to
be activated at a later date to pick up sounds even when the
receiver is down."
built-in microphones in automotive systems like General Motors'
OnStar to snoop on passengers' conversations.
When FBI agents remotely activated the system and were listening
in, passengers in the vehicle could not tell that their
conversations were being monitored.

Contactless
cards : "Highest encryption" not necessarily so -- Oct. 24, 2006
But in
tests on 20 cards from Visa, MasterCard and American Express,
the researchers here found that the cardholder's name and other
data was being transmitted without encryption and in plain text.
They could skim and store the information from a card with a
device the size of a couple of paperback books, which they
cobbled together from readily available computer and radio
components for $150.
And because the cards can be read even through a
wallet or an item of clothing, the security of the information,
the researchers say, is startlingly weak. "Would you be
comfortable wearing your name, your credit card number and your
card expiration date on your T-shirt?" Heydt-Benjamin, a
graduate student, asked
"It's the classic 'Let's depend on security
through obscurity--who's going to look? [ Ed: "who's going
to know" ] '" he said.

we'll all be caught by a measure of surprise
even though we here are following events much closer than anyone
