The electronic tagging of humans may provide immense applications from security and national identity management to the offender tagging. The uses of this technology are endless. It would provide a more permanent form of identification than a smart card.
In [ the ] future, a silicon chip implant could provide a unique and permanent source of identification of a person, containing vast amount of data on an individual such as nationality, medical record and citizen data. This data would be retrieved easily and could be transmitted instantly to any place via internet.

In the financial sector, it would offer new ways in personal verification technology. It would help in curbing identity theft and prevent fraudulent access to banking and credit card accounts because for meeting any such transaction, the physical presence would be required.

Medical personnel enlistment by DoD -- Dec. 16, 2006
The Army will assume responsibility for training enlisted medical personnel in the military services and manage all DOD medical research under a new governance plan for the Military Health System approved by Deputy Secretary of Defense Gordon England last month, MHS officials said.
MHS said the plan calls for co-location of the Army, Navy and Air Force surgeons general offices and the Tricare Management Activity, which manages the health plans covering 9.2 million active-duty and retired personnel and their families. The plan also calls for joint medical operations in Washington, D.C., and San Antonio, and a possible extension of joint medical operations to other areas that provide care to personnel to all three services

On Friday[ Ed: December 15-2006 ] the "Dying Patient Law", which allows physicians not to administer treatment to terminally ill patients against their will, went into force.
The law defines a "dying patient" as one who is terminally ill and has no more than six months left to live, even with medical treatment, or as a patient suffering from a multiple system failure who has up to two weeks to live.
According to the law, regular medical treatment must not be suspended, but a doctor can refrain from providing medical treatment, or abstain from renewing a repeated treatment, without risking facing manslaughter charges

The U.S. Commerce Department's security office warns that "a cellular telephone can be turned into a microphone and transmitter for the purpose of listening to conversations in the vicinity of the phone." An article in the Financial Times last year said mobile providers can "remotely install a piece of software on to any handset, without the owner's knowledge, which will activate the microphone even when its owner is not making a call."

Nextel and Samsung handsets and the Motorola Razr are especially vulnerable to software downloads that activate their microphones, said James Atkinson, a counter-surveillance consultant who has worked closely with government agencies. "They can be remotely accessed and made to transmit room audio all the time," he said. "You can do that without having physical access to the phone

Because modern handsets are miniature computers, downloaded software could modify the usual interface that always displays when a call is in progress. The spyware could then place a call to the FBI and activate the microphone--all without the owner knowing it happened. (The FBI declined to comment on Friday.)

"If a phone has in fact been modified to act as a bug, the only way to counteract that is to either have a bugsweeper follow you around 24-7, which is not practical, or to peel the battery off the phone," Atkinson said. Security-conscious corporate executives routinely remove the batteries from their cell phones, he added.
